Dahila Virus

There are over a dozen viruses known to affect dahlias, unfortunately, it is believed that the majority of dahlia stock is impacted by virus. We take dahlia virus very seriously and follow strict disinfection and culling protocols. Plants that appear to be viruses or we suspect may have virus are promptly pulled from our growing patch. We sanitize with a bleach solution between foliage cuts and while dividing tubers. We also use organic pest control methods to help reduce the spread. Although we take every precaution, we cannot guarantee your tuber will be virus-free. We encourage you to participate in dahlia virus prevention in your own garden too.

Growing Conditions

Growing dahlias successfully can be fairly easy! However, it is important to understand and follow your local growing conditions. Your tubers should not be planted when there is a risk of frost, you can check the USDA Hardiness Zone to find your last frost date. Tubers you receive from our farm will have an eye, neck, and body. This is everything a tuber needs to grow, granted you provide suitable growing conditions. Dahlias enjoy lots of sun and do best in spots where they will receive 6-8 hours of sun daily. They also need loose, well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. You can read more about successfully growing dahlias on the American Dahlia Society’s website.

FAQ’s

  • Maybe! Tubers will be shipped when the weather shows frost-free conditions. This is usually in mid-April. However, depending on where you live there still may be a chance of frost. We recommend planting once the threat of frost is gone. You can check the USDA Hardiness Zone to find your last frost date. You will also want to be aware of soil temperature and forecasted precipitation. Too much rain or moisture can cause tuber to rot before they have had the opportunity to set roots. Soil temperature should be 55-60 F before planting. Here is Western Washington it is usually safe to plant by Mother’s Day weekend.

  • No. Unfortunately, dahlias are all the rage and online sales often sell out quickly. If you have your heart set on a certain variety I recommend setting an alarm for the sale and checking out immediately after the item is added to your cart. It can also help to have your payment information saved on your phone or computer ahead of time. You can come back and shop for more after you have secured your favorite variety. If you make multiple orders send me an email at kiana@littlelupinefarm.com and I will be happy to combine orders so you don’t pay for more shipping then you need to.
